I believe the best kind of collaboration is giving others the space to show their full ability. All of us want to feel valuable. So we should let people do the work they believe in—and focus on supporting them so they can succeed.
For many years, I fell into the trap of doing everything myself. It became part of my identity. I didn’t realise how many opportunities I was missing: the chance to mentor and develop new talent, the chance to see ideas I would never have thought of, and even the chance to rest and recharge. I was too obsessed with doing it all.
When we’ve been working for a long time, our craft improves and our value as an individual contributor goes up. But I don’t believe our skills alone will create the kind of impact that turns us into leaders. The real work of leadership is creating new leaders.
Give people around you the chance to grow—and support them as they become better.
