One thing most people don’t know is that Steve Jobs is an exceptional designer. — Jonathan Ive

We all know that UX Design is good for business, most CEO and entrepreneurs want to work with the best-of-breed UX Designer.

Some people hire skilled UX Designer and motivate them to work, either by money or glory job title. But I feel the opposite way, I believe you should engage a UX Designer who already motivated and inspire them to work with you instead.

As a UX designer, here are a top 5 UX design client characteristics that always makes me feel excited about the project.

1. Come with the problems, not solutions.

You engage the UX Designer because you need the solutions. So focus on that. For example, Instead of telling your UX Designer to do a web forum, perhaps, you could challenge your UX Designer with open-ended questions, e.g. "How can we improve our communication channel?" The UX Designer may approach a web forum or propose a messenger mobile app instead. Work together with your UX Designer can lead to new questions that may unfold the solutions that you never think of.

If you have to tell your UX Designer a to-do-list, that designer is not UX Designer, that’s Junior Designer. Will you tell the doctor how to diagnosis?

2. Respect each other process.

The definition of Process is "a series of actions or steps taken in order to achieve a particular end". I understand that the UX Design method can be flexible, but the process is more about how individual subconsciously ordering something in particular steps and give a meaning to the design core values.

e.g. If your UX Designer approach the first sprint on Research & Strategy for long-term goals successes, but you prefer the designer to perform their pixels magic immediately to pressure you short-term needs/budget. This project might not be a sweet harmony. Of course, the process can be compromised, but it’s easier/quicker to find another designer rather than try to change their process.

3. Be clear about the constraint.

Some of my clients try to avoid talking about their constraint at first glance. Either budget, work scope, or timeline constraint. As a UX Design Agency, we don’t try to maximise our profit. We just need to understand the scope so that we can match up our design package to benefits our client the most.

If you be clear about your constraint, it will speed up the process and reduce an administration work so we both can focus on the goals. Let me tell you a secret, most of the UX Designer is willing to underpromise but overdeliver.

4. Once you decided, do not compare your UX Designer.

“FOCUS - Follow One Course Until Successful ~ Robert T. Kiyosaki” The best UX Designer in the world is the one who works with you right now. Even you hired the most wanted award designer, nothing guarantee that him/her will work for you not their reputation.

UX Design Process is like flying a plane. It might be a bit slow before it takes off but when it up in the air, it will be up to speed for a long run. Do your homework before commit to any UX Designer, you better find another one rather than compare the one you have.

5. Have the experimental minded.

“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work. ~Thomas A. Edison” The most effective way to be a success is to improve something every day without losing your enthusiasm. One of the good benefits of being a great UX Design Client is risk management. UX Designer will help you transform a significant risk into a small UX Design experimental.

Do not fear to be a failure, you won’t learn much from successes. Be experimental minded.

Either you are the CEO, CTO, Product Manager, Head of Product or whatsoever. If you work with a UX Designer or manage a UX Design team, you should consider yourself as a UX Design Client. I hope these 5 tips can help you harmony your team and build a better relationship with the UX Designer around you.
